Virginia Beach man charged with battery on Ellis County deputy
A Virginia Beach, Virginia, resident faces three misdemeanor charges in Ellis County District Court, including battery against a sheriff's deputy, after prosecutors filed a complaint Oct. 26.
Prosecutors allege that on July 23 in Ellis County, Joshua Norman made physical contact in a rude, insulting or angry manner with a uniformed Ellis County sheriff's deputy who was on duty. The complaint also alleges that Norman touched an adult without that person's consent, with sexual intent, and placed a third person in reasonable fear of immediate bodily harm. The Ellis County Sheriff's Office investigated the case.
Battery against a law enforcement officer and sexual battery are each charged as class A person misdemeanors, the most serious level of misdemeanor in Kansas, punishable by up to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $2,500. The assault count is a class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to a month in jail and a fine of up to $500.
District Judge Curtis Brown found probable cause for the charges and issued an arrest warrant Oct. 26 with a $2,000 bond. The warrant has been served; the return was filed Oct. 27. Assistant Ellis County Attorney Joshua Becker filed the complaint.
